Walking among wild animals in Nairobi

There are two places you can visit in Nairobi that are divine and are situated right next to each other: do a safari in the Nairobi National Park and also do the Nairobi Safari Walk. Unfortunately, I decided not to visit the Nairobi National Park since I’ve already been to various safaris and, as I was told, it’s not worth it if you’ve been / plan to go to Maasai Mara or to other places in East Africa such as the Queen Elizabeth Park in Uganda or any safaris in Tanzania.

The Nairobi Safari Walk is quite neat though. It is pretty much like a zoo but animals enjoy more liberties than in a zoo and most of them are not so confined as in a zoo. The walk takes about 45 minutes if you have a guide with you. The entire safari walk is about 2 kilometers.

You can see different hippos, crocodiles (learn about how the crocodile females can decide if they want to have more “boys” or “girls”), orange giraffes (!!!), leopard, cheetahs, rhinos, lions, buffalos etc.

My favorite attraction in the Safari Walk zone is the cheetah called Judith. She can be patted and she will stay still for pictures. She can become very friendly. As you can see she decided to lick my face while I was trying to make her look at the camera. Very friendly animal. Certainly play with it and forget for a second that under normal circumstances, in the wild, she would tear you apart and eat every single piece of you. Say cheeeeeeeeese :)

Taking the safari in the early morning is the best thing you can do. It’s a fresh start for the other attractions in the area: the David Sheldrik Wildlife Trust (the elephant orphanage) the Bomas of Kenya and the giraffe center. All of these are relatively close to each other and pretty far away from the city (8-10 kilometers away.) A full day can be spent in this area of the city.

Entrance fee: 600 Kenyan shillings. Tip the guide no more than 400 shillings.
